If you lay off 20,000 manufacturing jobs that pay 40 to 50k a year and replace them with 20,000 fast

how does that affect the unemployment rate

If everyone decided to to take the fast food jobs, then there would be no effect on the Unemployment rate.

However, the economy would take a hit, especially if this occured in a small area

It doesn%26#039;t affect the unemployment rate. And, that%26#039;s exactly the type of job swapping we%26#039;ve seen in the past 7 years. It%26#039;s called %26quot;Under-Employment%26quot;.|||You are assuming they all get full-time fast food jobs. A lot of the people in my area have lost $50,000+ jobs and had to settle for part-time jobs at Walmart that don%26#039;t even offer medical insurance. They still don%26#039;t qualify for unemployment, and they are making a fraction of what they made before.

I know plenty that have gone without a job for longer than unemployment was available to them. They just don%26#039;t get included as unemployed anymore.

I would hate to see what the %26quot;real%26quot; numbers for unemployment and the economy are - but I guess we won%26#039;t find that out until the current administration leaves office.
