Is the level of political correctness turning Britain in to a racist nation? Has the freedom to voice our honest opinions without getting jumped on made a bad situation worse?
I ask because after a recent visit to my local pub, I was shocked by the visciousness of my usually placid buddies on the subject of immigration. Also does it make me racist when I find it hard to disagree with many of thier opinions.
The main topic was on migrant workers, 400,000 of them when only 13,000 were expected, and unemployment rates for UK citizens up by the biggest jump in many years was their cause for concern.
Sensible opinions please.
Is the level of political correctness turning Britain in to a racist nation?mortgage lenders
No I dont believe that makes you racist, your simply concerned about things that are important to you, such as employment. Its a pretty big issue for most people.
Immigrants from other countries are under cutting the native workforce and of course this drives up the tension. With other Eastern european countries joining the EU, this has only intensified the feeling of anxiety.
I think the government really needs to address these fears before they come to a head.
Is the level of political correctness turning Britain in to a racist nation?
loan
Yes.|||Racist.No
Realist.Yes|||definately, i find im doing the same, bnp rules!!! or it should .|||Yes!
I have said this before on here and to my friends.
I truly believe that all this political correctness and media hype IS turning us into a nation of racists.
Don%26#039;t get me wrong, I don%26#039;t think people should be racist - but quite honestly, that is something that is NOT going to change overnight.
Being bullied and punished into it is NOT going to make it happen.|||That %26amp; The Daily Mail.|||Racist, No.
But we do appear to be far less tolerant, certainly those who want to force their beleifs and ways of life onto us are causing tension.
If tensions keep rising then we%26#039;re likely to see the return of race riots, but it would appear that politicians are at long last noticing that there%26#039;s a problem; so hopefully things will get calmed down.|||No, first off race is not as big an issue as culture, but more importantly acknowledging differences among cultures is wonderful. I for one don%26#039;t want every one to be the same, how boring, and the US system give advantages to minorities, sounds like reverse racism to me. I think people should be judged on individual merit not lumped together.|||All this political correctness is not helping and is stifling the British sense of humour and our freedom of speech. This in turn makes us resent the way that our way of life is being forced towards change by a minority. The immigration policy is out of control as we are a small island, and can%26#039;t support the influx of these extra people on our infrastructure such as schools,N.H.S. housing and jobs.|||Hello my friend, I like ur question and it is a good question and it is really not racist if u dont agree with other opinions and that is a good thing because that is a strength that u have in yourself (if u know wat I mean) but to be honest I agree with the 13,000 accepted from the 400,000 people because these people do not have War in their countries and if too many people come in, this will make TAX increase and it will be good for the goverment but it wont be good for us. Britain is not a racist nation and if it was, War would occur between races and thousands of people would die because of racism, but still I have been in a pub lately and I have seen so many Asians inside and to be honest I was surprised and this was in the World Cup with England playing and to be honest the reason why there is so many unemployed it is because of two things that I belief in;
%26gt; It maybe because of not qualified/educated people.
%26gt; The price of TAX deducting from peoples wages,
e.g. Doctor earns 锟?0,000 p.a and after TAX deduction 锟?0,000.
(Now that takes the piss).
The last thing that I need to say is that our voices are always heard by the goverment and we have freedom but it may seems they are listenin but basiclly it just goes out the other ear and they do their work, that they feel like doing.
Sorry If I Couldnt Answer Ur Question.
Bless.
JFK!|||You can%26#039;t force people to have an open mind. I guess political correctness would only serve to frustrate those who have to fake it to abide by it. That would probably make them angrier than they may have been about the issues. But they would have been racist whether they are allowed to state it openly or not.
The purpose of political correctness would be for those minority groups who would usually be attacked (verbally or otherwise) would feel comfortable going about their day to day business without being openly harrassed and ostracized. It is basically a way to get people to behave and be considerate.
As for the work thing, at the risk of oversimplifying - if a person is qualified for a job why should they get/not get a job based on race and origin? If someone else is not as qualified as a legal immigrant, why should they get the job over the qualified immigrant? If there%26#039;s a problem with how people are being hired, you need to look at the employer, not the immigrant. Everyone has to eat, and it might be a little unreasonable to ask immigrants not to look for jobs.|||A lot of public opinion is the result of inaccurate media hype - usually headlines in tabloid redtops. For example, regarding the 400,000 figure you mentioned, I believe that a serious study was recently made that showed an enormous number of these immigrants were from places like Poland and that many have returned, or intend to return.
In my view it doesn%26#039;t make you racist if your opinions are honestly held and are the result of serious thought on and analysis of the facts. As a person with a few good friends from so-called %26#039;immigrant%26#039; groups, even I admit to getting a little worried when I think of an uncontrolled influx of people into certain areas of the UK. It could lead to probable overloading of schools, social and medical services, etc..
But on the subject of political correctness, I think it will ultimately destroy many aspects of the traditional British sense of humour. One can not say anything the least bit controversial these days without risk of prosecution - especially with respect to religion...|||Not racist but less tolerant of the situation as it stands.
The government don%26#039;t seem to be doing too much about the problem so people are getting frustrated and venting their anger out in the public and on places like this. Unfortunately the problems will escalate if nothing is done and the British just don%26#039;t feel like their opinions are worth anything.|||I do not think that it is helping.
What you have to remember is that PC evolved out of trying to STOP racism. Certain terms and words were used as insults against others, so (quite rightly) it was stopped. However the problem was that people did not know when to %26#039;draw the line%26#039; so it has developed that people are afraid to make ANY type of comment that could / may be seen as offencive.
I had an Asian chap ask me if I took my coffee %26#039;white%26#039; then recoil in horror as to what he said !!!
Worse still, the people who and decide if something is politically incorrect are GUESSING %26amp; ASSUMING what will offend others.
Basically we are in a situation where people, if you say ANYTHING which excludes others for what ever reason, despite SENSIBLE REASONS, you are classed to be %26#039;racist%26#039; %26#039;agest etc%26#039; eg Is it AGEIST that I have to wait till 60 + till I claim my pension? or in the case you have mentioned %26#039;racist%26#039; against migration workers.
The truth is that we have limited jobs %26amp; rescources in this country and if we let too many people in there will not be enough rescources for others (and yes I do mean the people who were born here, which seems fair).
As for sounding racist, well, I think you have to be sensible and look at the REASONS WHY you are saying what you are saying.
If you are saying no to migrant workers to protect the interests of UK that is fine, however if you are saying no to these workers soley in the grounds of their skin colour, religion culture THAT is racism.|||Yes. It is driving the English working class into the open arms of the BNP. Labour pays scant attention if any at all to the needs wants and desires of the indigenous white Anglo Saxon population, which makes up about 85 percent of the people of UK. In addition the UK-gov is scared witless of the Celts and it is for this reason they have been given their own Parliament in Scotland and Assembly in Wales. England awake - you are a great people with a great history of which you and the entire world can be justly proud.
The English do not have a herritage - they have a great and glorious history - join it today.
Today, 25th October is the anniversary of the great English victory over the French at Agincourt. When the King told his Welsh archers %26quot;loose arrows%26quot; they did and their one thousand strength, each archer letting fly 8 to 10 arrows in the first minute of battle, decimated the French lines. The English infantry ran through the French and tore them to shreds. Victory.|||Political correctness is now prevailing over the biggest separatism this country has ever seen. each group eyeing the other with distrust and envy.|||the racism card is over used and quite frankly becoming boring. when certain non english come here and our culture doesnt mix with theres, kick em out instead of whining about people like me being racist. define racism anyway........................|||Racism has most certainly increased in the UK over the last 5 to 10 years. I believe most of it is in the new UK islands that have been created, Bradfordistan, Lutonstan, and Londonistan. I see from a political map that more of these islands are currently being formed.|||If your white and christian, just being proud of your own race and religion is being racist. If you want to keep family blood pure your racist, if you state the facts about some minorities your racist, to many people play the race card to readily these days. I don%26#039;t believe in racism, I give everyone equal chance. Recently a friend of mine had a new employee to train and evaluate, he wasn%26#039;t all that happy because he was there my mate wasn%26#039;t getting the overtime he needed. This guy was black and useless (I had to evaluate him too and he was useless) and my mate said to him that if he was going to be there taking his overtime he was going to have to pulll his weight. The guy wrote a letter to the supervisor and said my mate was a racist, and was being unfair. I saw the potential for this when I had to evaluate him so I was very understanding and patient, even though him being there actually increased my workload. I just wrote a bad evaluation. Now he%26#039;s gone, but my mate had to go before review board, and the real stupid thing is my mate is married to a Etheopian woman. You want to race discrimination, just try to get a job in China town, a muslim restraunt, store, but if you report that, they laugh at you.|||Hello Hippy,
Sorry if this is more long winded than you wanted, but this is a complex question. I鈥檒l try to keep it brief as possible. Please drop me a mail if want to challenge any particular statement.
As long as your friends are not complaining about the arrival of a particular race, they are not being racist. They are just inhumane and selfish.
Here鈥檚 what your friends have to consider regarding the influx of eastern Europeans that the tabloids like to shout about.
Do they believe that an individual or group of people have any right over a piece of land because they were there first? I don鈥檛, but this is a whole separate argument, so lets assume they do.
Do they believe it is ethical to exploit the economic dominance of this country by picking and choosing what parts of the world are allowed in? Anyone who has worked in the public sector will tell you that this country would not function without immigration. African nurses make up the back bone of the NHS and polish labourers are supporting our construction industry. The reason why there is such a large Caribbean population is because they were invited over to build our roads and transport systems. Meanwhile African hospitals are critically understaffed.
Perhaps it would be okay if we could claim we had built our economic strength from the hard work of native citizens, and therefore it would be fairer to demand that only immigrants of such high stature could join us. But that is not the case. Britain is rich today due to centuries of global exploits; the from the pillaging British Empire to the current vicious foreign trade tactics. We have immorally got to a position of economic dominance, and by draining other nations of their skilled and useful citizens, while leaving them with the burden of their unskilled and dependant citizens, we are maintaining our own security and pushing other nations down. To allow uncontrolled immigration would indeed see some of our jobs go to other people and our wealth, relative to other nations, go down. And this will bother all those who are selfish, inhumane, our value our race and nation above the lives of others.
One final point, as John Ried declares that he wants strict controls on Bulgarian and Romanian immigration. If your friends are fine with this protectionist cherry picking of other countries work force, what about the growing number of people who are buying second homes in Bulgaria. House prices and going up by a third each year in some eastern European regions, as rich westerners push the property market up above the average income of the local work force.
If your friends think all this is fair, then they may not be racist. But they are selfish and inhumane.
So sorry again for the long answer. But I worked hard not to make it much longer. And hats off to anyone who can sum this up in one paragraph!|||Yes
Political correctness has just gone far too far. It creates resentment among the indigenous people and stifles freedom of speech.
It is a disease in this country and needs to be wiped out - along with it%26#039;s practitioners.|||PC is cack. It seems if you dont agree with what someone does you must be a narrow minded racist scum bag bigot, P.C is ruining us, and its always seen as one way, that we must respect immigrants who come into our country, yet there are those who live in the UK, spouting hate against the UK. And i think thats treason because if they want to be classed as members of a country they should accept how it is, or go somewhere else. Simple as.|||Its not racist to fear for your jobs and safety but you are right about political correctness. In my opinion a lot of the tension right now is being caused by the %26quot;P.C. police%26quot;. Muslims and others are feeling singled out and the resident population feels that the %26quot;outsiders%26quot; are getting special treatment. It does not help when British Airways of all people send a woman home from work for wearing a crucifix.
By and large ordinary people get on just fine. My old boss was German, my neighbour is afro-caribbean, the bloke who runs my local shop is a sikh from Pakistan and there is a family of Poles round the street who I invited round for a barbecue in the summer.
Live and let live.|||If your job and livelihood had disappeared how would you feel?|||I agree... But remember... next year Bulgaria and Romania come into the equation... Another 400,000.... They%26#039;ve now put a block on only SKILLED workers coming in but to little to late... We may have a revolution on our hands and to be honest i%26#039;ll be on the front line... AND I%26#039;M NOT USUALLY LIKE THIS
